Why Read The Bible?

But he answered, "It is written," " 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.' "

Matthew 4:4

Life Question: "What and where is your compass?"

Theologians have their thoughts about it.

Philosophers expressed their thoughts on the reasons as well.

Scholars both discuss and debate on the veracity of its history.

Skeptics set out to disprove the validity it has in our lives today.

Still the question remains. Why read the Bible?

The Bible is not merely a book of historical fact about the Roman Empire, it's not

stories based on characters of a book of great imagination. It is the true historical

accounting of the life of our Savior and Lord Jesus Christ and the Father who gave

his Son so that we would be forgiven of our sins.

I will be the first to say I've not read the entire Bible cover to cover. I have skipped around

different chapters in both the Old and New Testaments.  Our history is quite enlightening and interesting, at the same time and puzzling sometimes. Yes, I said history because it

is the story told of those who came before us in search of a truth, a peace and a contentment that is not found within the bounds of the earthly realm.

Persecution, poverty, prejudice were just a fraction of the hardships faced by those

in biblical times. They faced having to travel long distances because they were

displaced from their towns and homes and education was hard to come by as well.

The people of that time were in dire need of a compass.....and Jesus Christ was it!

When He came into their lives, they really didn't know what to make of him, they

weren't always sure what he was trying to express to them because of the parables he

spoke in at times, but over time his ministry grew.

Jesus left His book for us to use in the way it is proper. As a compass. The Bible gives instruction on every facet of our lives, marriage, family, morals, values, how to handle

conflict, our finances, acceptance of others and any other subject you can think of.

So you mean if we follow EVERYTHING the Bible says, we will not screw up? HARDLY! Jesus knew we would screw up now and then. We ARE human after all,

Jesus loves us anyway and disciplines us when we get to be His unruly children!

He is a wonderful, loving and compassionate Parent to all of us.

So as the Life Question asks: What and where is your compass?

Blessings,

Liz Ciccone
